Marcia Fortin Gesick

Marcia Fortin Gesick, 65 of Old Saybrook, died peacefully on February 11, 2009 surrounded by her loving family and friends, after a long and courageous battle with Lupus. Marcia grew up in Madison and was the daughter of Inez Totman of Niantic, and David Fortin of Ascutney, Vermont. Marcia graduated from Tufts University in Boston with an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene.

Marcia was a Director of The United Way, a member of the Lion’s club, and served on the board of Youth and Family Services. She was the President and CEO of Amtech, Inc. in Branford, CT and also worked as a Real Estate agent for Century 21.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Marcia greatest gift was her artistic nature. She was an expert Theorem Painter, knitter, crafter and cook. She was also a seamstress to actresses and her gowns appeared on the Merv Griffin Show.

Marcia loved classic homes, particularly Victorian homes. She had a keen eye for architecture and classic home restoration. She loved to collect various antiques, especially Depression glass. She enjoyed reading books, mostly fiction, and watching HGTV.

Marcia was best remembered as a loving and caring mother. Not only did she have four sons, she was a matriarch to many who called her mom. She always knew what her boys were up to, good or bad, and was always a favorite on class field trips.

Marcia is predeceased by her husband of 33 years, William. She leaves four sons, John Gill of Niantic; Steven Gill and wife Lena of Murfreesboro, TN; Leigh Gesick and wife Kathleen of Old Saybrook; Michael Gesick and wife Wendy of Chester. Marcia also leaves five grandchildren: Alexa and Jonathan Gesick; Barrett, Anna, and Audrey Gill. Marcia leaves one sister, Holly Martin of Florida; and was predeceased by her oldest sister, Nancy Timiniskas, formerly of Old Saybrook.

Calling hours were on Wednesday February 18, 2009 from 6-8PM at Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook. A memorial service celebrating Marcia’s life was also held at the First Church of Christ (Congregational) in Old Saybrook on Thursday February 19th at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Marcia’s name be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, www.lupus.org.
